Common Questions About Stuart

Is Stuart on the water?

Yes. The city sits on the St. Lucie River, with ocean access through the St. Lucie Inlet. Waterfront can mean river, cana

What is Stuart known for?

Stuart is the Sailfish Capital of the World, and it is also called the Panama Canal of Florida because the Okeechobee Waterway reaches the Atlantic here. For a boater, that matters. Downtown adds historic storefronts, galleries, the Riverwalk, a weekly market and a music series, so there is usually a reason to head downtown on a weekend.

Is downtown Stuart walkable?

Yes, downtown is the walkable part. Along Osceola Street and the blocks around it you will find independent shops, galleries and antique stores, and the Riverwalk keeps the water close. Outside downtown, most of Stuart is a drive. If walking to dinner matters to you, tell me and I will focus your search there.

What county is Stuart in, and why does it matter?

Stuart is the county seat of Martin County. County lines matter in Florida because the school district, property tax millage rates and insurance conditions all follow the county, so a similar home just over the line in St. Lucie or Palm Beach County can carry a different yearly cost. I walk through the numbers for the specific address before you make an offer.

l or intracoastal, and each has different bridge heights, dock rules and flood considerations. Tell me how you boat and I will point you to the right fit.

Do homes in Stuart need flood insurance?

It depends on the flood zone of the specific property, and lenders often require it in higher-risk zones. I check the zone and get an insurance quote before you write an offer, so there are no surprises at closing.

Where are the beaches near Stuart?

Stuart Beach and Bathtub Beach are on Hutchinson Island, just across the bridge from downtown. Jonathan Dickinson State Park is nearby for river and trail time.

How do schools work for a Stuart address?

Stuart is in the Martin County School District, one county-wide district. Which school a home is zoned for depends on the address, so I confirm the assignment with the district before you make an offer.

What should I know about the homestead exemption if I buy in Stuart?

If Stuart is your permanent home, you can claim Florida’s homestead exemption, and with it the Save Our Homes cap on how fast your assessed value can rise. Timing matters: you need to own and live in the home by January 1 and file by March 1. I walk every buyer through this during the purchase and put it in writing right after closing.
